New York City Introduces America’s First Official Cryptocurrency Office

New York City Pioneers Municipal Blockchain Initiative

On October 14, 2025, New York City took a significant step forward in the digital age by establishing an official office devoted to cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Mayor Eric Adams signed Executive Order 57, initiating the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology, a pioneering move as it represents the first municipal body in the United States dedicated solely to these advanced technologies.

Inauguration of the Office of Digital Assets

Appointed as Executive Director, Moises Rendon will lead this groundbreaking initiative. The office will operate under the supervision of the city’s Chief Technology Officer, positioning itself as a central hub for digital asset management within the city.

Key Objectives of the Crypto Office

Outlined in the executive order, the office has a quintet of primary responsibilities. It will steer city policy on digital assets, ensure coordination across various agencies, spearhead public education programs, evaluate how blockchain technology could optimize city services, and collaborate with the NYC Economic Development Corporation to attract businesses and create job opportunities.

This strategic move aims to strike a balance between protecting consumers and expanding access. A significant portion of the work will target educating underbanked New Yorkers about potential risks like fraud and scams in the digital asset realm.

Appointment of a Policy Expert

Rendon brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles within city government, focusing on technology and policy issues, most recently serving as a policy advisor in the Office of Technology and Innovation. His expertise will be crucial in connecting city departments involved in payments, records, and technical projects, ensuring a cohesive approach that minimizes confusion for both residents and businesses interacting with city services related to tokens, wallets, or blockchain records.

Educational and Protective Initiatives

A critical mission of the new office is to educate the public. Through outreach programs, the office will demystify digital assets, elucidating how they function and the potential risks involved. This initiative aims to reduce the likelihood of consumers falling victim to scams or losing their savings to cyber threats. Additionally, the office will explore blockchain applications for public records and secure data sharing, potentially collaborating with private enterprises or academic institutions.

In alignment with city statements, the office will work in conjunction with state and federal regulators rather than supplant them. It will serve as an advisory body to the mayor and provide a singular point of contact for industry groups seeking collaboration with the city.

Mayor Adams: A Crypto Enthusiast

Mayor Adams has been a vocal supporter of cryptocurrency for years. Upon assuming office in January 2022, he famously converted his first three paychecks into Bitcoin and Ethereum, a decision met with skepticism by many. However, as Bitcoin’s value approached $100,000 by late 2024, Adams responded to his critics, stating, “Remember you all mocked me when I first got my Bitcoin? Who’s laughing now?” Records indicate that his Bitcoin holdings at the end of 2023 varied between $5,000 and $55,000.
