Global Expansion: From El Salvador to the World
In a significant move towards broadening its educational outreach, the non-profit organization My First Bitcoin (MFB), originally known as Mi Primer Bitcoin, has redefined its mission. Established in El Salvador in 2021, MFB has been at the forefront of independent Bitcoin education through its diverse array of programs. The organization recently declared its commitment to providing global educators with the tools and resources needed to teach Bitcoin effectively worldwide.
Since its inception, the BTC Diploma program has been a cornerstone of MFB’s educational offerings, covering a wide range of topics from the nuances of fiat currency to the multifaceted history of Bitcoin. This comprehensive program has successfully engaged over 27,000 students, primarily in El Salvador, and its reach has expanded with the 2023 workbook being translated into 23 languages, facilitating education from South America to Asia.
Embracing a global perspective, MFB has chosen to transition from its local identity, Mi Primer Bitcoin, to a more universally recognized English moniker. This rebranding is part of a broader strategy that includes a restructuring of the team, with new roles and leadership positions designed to support the organization’s worldwide educational mission.
The physical office in El Salvador will close as MFB adopts a fully remote, globally distributed working model. Founder John Dennehy expressed the organization’s ambitious vision: “Our goal has always been to effect global change, starting from a single student to a single city to a single nation, and now we aim to extend our impact from 6 million to 8 billion people.”
Empowering Educators: My First Bitcoin’s Renewed Mission
Despite these changes, MFB remains steadfast in its foundational mission. Dennehy highlighted the organization’s commitment to scaling its impact by empowering educators and projects across the globe, rather than solely driving initiatives independently. The new focus is on equipping teachers with the necessary tools, systems, and support to launch their own Bitcoin education projects, such as circular economies, community meetups, and educational workshops.
The organization’s evolving role will see it stepping into a more facilitative capacity, concentrating on the development and enhancement of both new and existing curricula tailored to diverse audiences. Consequently, MFB will relinquish its weekly and monthly meetups in El Salvador, transferring these responsibilities to a collective of local initiatives. Furthermore, the Public School Program in El Salvador has concluded its operations.
In 2023, MFB commenced a collaborative effort with El Salvador’s Ministry of Education, aiming to integrate the BTC diploma curriculum into the national public education system by 2024. This collaboration is part of the broader mission to foster financial empowerment and BTC adoption within local communities.
Central to MFB’s new strategy is the expansion of the Independent Bitcoin Educators Node Network, inaugurated in 2023. This network provides a platform for individuals to engage with MFB’s mission, supporting over 70 projects across 38 countries. “Our aim is to enable others to succeed in their communities and then connect them to form a global movement,” Dennehy concluded.
