In a significant development in the world of cryptocurrency, Anatoly Legkodymov, the co-founder of the digital currency platform Bitzlato, has made headlines by officially appealing to former United States President Donald Trump for a presidential pardon. Legkodymov, who hails from Russia, was apprehended and charged for managing an unlicensed money transmitting business through his company, Bitzlato.

Following his arrest in January 2023, Legkodymov admitted guilt to a charge related to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business by December 2023. Subsequently, on July 18, 2024, a US Judge sentenced him to time already served after he spent 18 months in the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Centre (MDC).

A report from a Russian media source published on July 11 disclosed that Ivan Melnikov, vice president of the Russian branch of the International Committee for Human Rights, confirmed Legkodymov’s request for a federal pardon from Trump. The plea comes amid efforts by French authorities to extradite the Bitzlato co-founder to France.
French officials are reportedly seeking Legkodymov’s extradition to face charges similar to those in the United States, involving the operation of an unauthorized money-transmitting business. The Russian engineer could potentially face a 20-year sentence in France for his alleged involvement in transferring substantial funds linked to cyber crimes and attacks.
Melnikov remarked, “Anatoly is not a criminal; he has become a scapegoat in a political campaign targeting the crypto market and skilled Russian programmers. His pardon request stems from the hope that the US will adopt a more balanced approach to digital finance, fostering dialogue between the US and Russia.” This strategic move aligns with Trump’s history of issuing approximately 58 presidential pardons since assuming office, including the notable pardon of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.
