Leveraging Simplicity for Quantum Security

The announcement revolves around Simplicity, Blockstream’s innovative smart contract language designed for Liquid. Instead of waiting for a network-wide consensus upgrade, the team employed Simplicity to construct a customized spending condition. This allows users to secure their assets through a contract necessitating post-quantum signatures for redemption. As a result, Liquid users can opt for quantum-focused protection for LBTC and various other assets, such as stablecoins and tokenized securities, without altering Liquid’s fundamental consensus rules.

Traditionally, incorporating post-quantum signatures would require consensus modifications across the entire network—a slow and meticulous process involving all stakeholders. The verifier is based on SHRINCS, a compact hash-based post-quantum signature design developed explicitly for blockchain environments. The system includes a stateful mode for regular use, generating smaller signatures, and a stateless fallback mode for recovery scenarios. This dual-track design addresses a practical challenge in post-quantum cryptography: ensuring theoretical safety while maintaining usability in real-world wallet interactions.

Importantly, this development is not confined to lab simulations. Blockstream broadcasted two live transactions on the Liquid mainnet—one utilizing the stateful mode and another the stateless fallback mode. These transactions secured tangible value, demonstrating the approach’s applicability not only for Bitcoin on Liquid but also for any asset issued on the network.

In a symbolic gesture, Blockstream filled excess space in the post-quantum transactions with the Bitcoin whitepaper, paying homage to the cypherpunk origins of this endeavor.
