Another Democratic member of the U.S. SEC plans to resign, leaving Republicans in charge of the agency by February.

Commissioner Jaime Lizárraga is leaving his position on January 17, as announced in a statement on Friday. This move could potentially give Republicans an advantage in redirecting the regulator’s policies, including those related to cryptocurrency, without facing months of delay.

As of now, Caroline Crenshaw will be the sole Democrat on the five-member commission heading into 2025. Her term has already expired, but she is currently in an extension period that can last for about 18 months.
