This past week marked a significant development in the battle against cybercrime as a man implicated in orchestrating an extensive cryptocurrency romance scam received a stern federal sentence. According to records from the court and statements from the Justice Department, Daren Li, who holds dual citizenship in China and St. Kitts and Nevis, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. Li’s involvement in the intricate scheme resulted in the theft of over $73 million from unsuspecting victims.

Building Trust in the Digital World

Li, along with a group of accomplices, designed fraudulent trading websites that mimicked legitimate platforms to deceive victims. Utilizing the reach of social media and dating applications, they developed personal and sometimes romantic connections with their targets. This careful and calculated approach allowed them to gain the trust necessary to persuade victims to transfer funds. The operation, known as “pig butchering” within the industry, involved grooming individuals over extended periods before making monetary requests.

The Complex Path of Crypto Transfers

As detailed in court documents, the financial trail did not vanish into thin air but was systematically funneled into bank accounts linked to shell companies within the United States. From there, the funds were further dispersed. Prosecutors revealed that nearly $60 million followed this path. While eight co-conspirators have confessed and await sentencing, the investigation continues to unravel additional connections.

Some transactions were obscured through a series of banking maneuvers, including converting funds into cryptocurrency and transferring them through digital wallets, complicating the tracing process.

Global Investigations and Collaborative Efforts

The investigation saw the collaboration of multiple federal agencies, spearheaded by the US Secret Service Global Investigative Operations Center, with significant contributions from Homeland Security Investigations’ El Camino Real Financial Crimes Task Force and the US Marshals Service. Given the international scope, with suspects and servers often situated abroad, cross-border coordination was essential.

Li managed to elude authorities by slipping an electronic ankle monitor and fleeing in December 2025, an action that further complicated efforts to bring him to justice. However, he was eventually captured and admitted to conspiring to launder illicit funds.

An Alarming Increase in Crypto Crimes

Reports indicate a surge in crypto-related scams as of early 2026, with a security firm’s analysis suggesting losses of $370 million in January alone. Phishing and social engineering tactics accounted for the majority of these losses, with a single incident resulting in a $280 million theft.

Crypto Crime and Legal Consequences

The severe sentence delivered in the Central District of California underscores the gravity with which courts view cryptocurrency crimes. While victims may not recover all of their lost funds, restitution orders could provide some financial relief. Ongoing investigations are likely to lead to further prosecutions as authorities continue to trace financial pathways and collaborate with international partners.
