Exploring the Future of Ethereum Privacy: A New Roadmap by the Ethereum Foundation’s PSE Team
In an effort to bolster privacy within the Ethereum network, the Ethereum Foundation’s Privacy & Scaling Explorations (PSE) team has introduced a comprehensive new roadmap. This initiative, now rebranded as the “Privacy Stewards of Ethereum,” emphasizes the critical role privacy will play in the blockchain’s future development. As global awareness of privacy concerns increases, the team is committed to ensuring Ethereum remains at the forefront of secure and private blockchain technology.
Unveiling Ethereum’s New Privacy Roadmap
On September 13, the PSE team outlined their strategic approach in a blog post, positioning themselves as a “problem-first” team. Their focus is on identifying operational gaps and fostering collaborations with developers across the Ethereum ecosystem. The roadmap prioritizes privacy, making it a central component of Ethereum’s applications.
Three primary domains are set for exploration: private writes, private reads, and private proving. Private writes are designed to streamline on-chain actions such as transfers and governance votes, making them both affordable and seamless. Meanwhile, private reads aim to protect users’ identities and intentions when engaging with applications or querying the blockchain, addressing areas where sensitive metadata is vulnerable to leaks.
In terms of private proving, the goal is to make the generation and verification of proofs both efficient and privacy-preserving. This initiative will enable users to authenticate information across diverse platforms, validating on-chain and off-chain states, web data, documents, and identity attestations without disclosing unnecessary details.
Current Priorities and Initiatives
Over the next three to six months, the Privacy Stewards of Ethereum are set to focus on several key priorities critical to advancing the three main tracks previously identified. To enhance private writes, the PSE plans to develop privacy-enabled transfers through projects like PlasmaFold and Kohaku, alongside efforts to enhance stealth addresses and private voting protocols.
The team’s efforts also extend to confidential DeFi, where they aim to collaborate with partners to establish privacy frameworks that could facilitate institutional adoption. Regarding private reads, the Privacy Stewards of Ethereum will explore network-level protections by experimenting with ORAM and PIR to safeguard user activities from surveillance.
For private proving, the team is advancing protocols to enhance data portability and provenance through zkTLS. By optimizing TLSNotary and creating an SDK for cross-platform integration, the PSE intends to simplify adoption and accelerate the growth of the zkTLS ecosystem. Concurrently, work on private identity will focus on establishing new standards for privacy-preserving wallets and unlinkable credentials in alignment with global frameworks.
Ethereum’s Current Market Status
As of the latest available data, Ethereum is trading at $4,667, experiencing a slight 0.69% decline in the past 24 hours. This reflects the dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency market and the ongoing developments within the Ethereum ecosystem.
