Ethereum Foundation’s New Direction: Enhancing Protocol Efficiency and User Experience

The Ethereum Foundation is revamping its developmental strategy to tackle core protocol efficiency and user experience challenges, following pivotal leadership changes earlier this year. Co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak highlighted these new focal points in a statement on X, emphasizing that this realignment aims to fortify Ethereum’s long-term scalability while enhancing its immediate usability.

Innovative Protocol Upgrades and Vitalik Buterin’s Evolving Role

Stańczak discussed extensive, community-driven conversations on Ethereum’s base-layer roadmap, emphasizing the changes designed to enhance focus among researchers and core developers. He stated, “Our discussions about the Layer 1 scaling roadmap have been extensive, and the feedback so far suggests that the community appreciates our ambition. Turning that ambition into reality now depends on the focus of the core development teams and researchers.”

As part of this strategic shift, the Ethereum Foundation seeks to allocate more of Vitalik Buterin’s time to advanced research rather than the daily operational grind. Stańczak noted, “We aimed, among other things, to free more of Vitalik’s time for research and exploration,” highlighting Buterin’s significant contributions through writings on topics like RISC-V and zkVMs, which have shifted focus towards potentially transformative technologies.

These insights have significantly contributed to realigning the Ethereum community around long-term objectives such as privacy, modularity, and decentralized infrastructure. Stańczak clarified, “Vitalik’s proposals are not mandates but starting points for community-led exploration, encouraging progress in challenging research areas.” He also emphasized the importance of giving other researchers freedom, acknowledging the contributions of individuals like Justin Drake and Tankard Feist.

Overall, the Foundation’s research direction now gears towards short-term outcomes, including enhanced Layer-1 scaling, improved Layer-2 integration, and more seamless user experiences—particularly in forthcoming upgrades like Pectra, Fusaka, and Glamsterdam.

RISC-V Proposal: Expanding Developer Flexibility

The Foundation is also evaluating the transition from the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to a cutting-edge execution environment powered by RISC-V. Originally proposed by Buterin, this transition could streamline execution, boost efficiency, and simplify the implementation of zero-knowledge proofs.

Stańczak explained, “We are exploring ways to bring forward projects that currently look three to five years away,” hinting at potential acceleration in next-gen execution and consensus layer development. RISC-V offers advantages like broader language compatibility and potential backward compatibility with existing EVM contracts, allowing developers to continue using Solidity and Vyper or venture into languages like Rust.

Additionally, RISC-V might enhance validator performance through hardware-level customization while preserving essential Ethereum features such as account models and contract interactions. As research and experimentation progress, Stańczak stressed the significance of community input: “Ethereum researchers often ask that readers recognize the exploratory nature of their posts and proposals. Focus remains essential.”
