Binance Customers Targeted in SMS Scam Connected to Bybit Breach

Beware: Scammers Exploit Bybit Hack to Target Binance Users

In the wake of the recent Bybit security breach, opportunistic scammers have shifted their focus to Binance users. These malicious actors are sending out deceptive text messages that masquerade as official communications from Binance, aiming to deceive users into believing their accounts are under threat.

Alarming Fake Alerts of Security Breaches

The fraudulent messages often assert that the recipient’s Binance account has been compromised. Some even allege unauthorized access from locations like North Korea, instilling fear and prompting hasty reactions. The primary intention is to manipulate users into acting impulsively without confirming the authenticity of the message source.

The Deceptive Scheme to Divert Funds

Embedded within these messages are links or contact numbers purporting to connect users with Binance support. In truth, these are channels controlled by scammers. Once users engage, they are misled into transferring their funds to what they believe is a “secure” wallet. Tragically, this wallet is under the scammers’ control, resulting in a loss of both money and sensitive information.

Insights from a Crypto Expert’s Ordeal

Joe Zhou, a Web3 expert based in Hong Kong, recently fell victim to this scam and shared his experience on LinkedIn. Zhou recounted receiving a deceptive SMS from a number he recognized as Binance’s, one he frequently used for verification codes.

“The message alarmed me by saying my Binance account was being accessed from North Korea,”

Zhou emphasized the increasing sophistication of these scams and underscored the necessity for heightened user awareness and vigilance to avert such losses.

Binance Issues a Cautionary Notice

In response to these fraudulent activities, Binance has proactively warned its user base. The exchange has reiterated that it never requests financial transactions or personal data via SMS. Users are advised to verify any communications by checking their official Binance accounts or established communication channels.

Protecting Yourself from Phishing Attacks

To guard against phishing scams, users should avoid clicking on links from unsolicited messages. Instead, they should directly access Binance’s official website or application. Implementing two-factor authentication (2FA) and keeping abreast of potential security threats are crucial steps in fraud prevention.

How Scammers Exploit Fear for Gain

Scammers masterfully manipulate emotions of urgency and fear to ensnare victims, prompting rash decisions. In panic, users often bypass verification of message legitimacy, inadvertently surrendering personal details. Despite advancements in exchange security measures, such phishing schemes still find success.

Zhou noted that the mention of “North Korea” in the message triggered panic, leading him to hastily contact the number provided.

“I was told my Binance account was accessed from North Korea,” he recounted. “After days of stress from the Bybit hack, I reacted without second thought by calling that number.”

In light of major security incidents, crypto users need to exercise increased caution. Scammers prey on the heightened alertness of investors post-breaches, making them more susceptible. Always verify the authenticity of messages before taking any action and report any suspicious activity observed in relation to Binance.
