Seven Gang Members Sentenced for Cryptocurrency Extortion and Kidnapping
In a landmark case, the Manchester Crown Court has delivered justice by sentencing seven members of a notorious gang involved in a string of kidnappings, brutal assaults, and cryptocurrency extortion schemes. Over a period of several months, the gang persistently targeted a particular individual, coercing him to transfer significant sums of cryptocurrency under duress. The situation escalated into intense violence, including threats, confinement, and severe physical harm, until the authorities intervened and apprehended the culprits.
Unraveling the Heinous Crimes
The victim’s nightmare commenced in January 2023, when he was accosted at his home by a gang member demanding cryptocurrency. Succumbing to the threats, he made the first of several coerced transfers. Just weeks later, David Povey, accompanied by an accomplice wielding a knife, returned to extort additional funds. In the hope of ending the intimidation, the victim once again surrendered cryptocurrency.
By October 2023, the gang’s tactics had grown increasingly savage. Gary Edwards, a gang member, ensnared the victim to a secluded flat where he endured restraint, beatings, and overnight confinement. When he failed to produce funds immediately, another aggressor, Kane Godiff, unleashed death threats upon him.
The violence persisted for several hours before the victim was released after making a payment. Yet, the aggression continued. In one subsequent incident, the victim was abducted, blindfolded, and subjected to further threats and physical torment. The final attack took place on November 30, 2023, when Edwards forcibly transported the victim in a van, leading to another assault at a different location.
Law Enforcement Intervention and Judicial Proceedings
The turning point arrived on December 2, 2023, when law enforcement responded to an anonymous tip-off concerning the victim’s peril. Officers arrived at a property just as gang member Karl Johnson attempted to escape. Inside, they found the severely battered victim desperately seeking assistance.
The scene was rife with incriminating evidence, including firearms, ammunition, blunt weapons, and restraining materials, all supporting the victim’s harrowing account. On January 30, 2024, the Manchester Crown Court imposed significant prison sentences. Jonathan Newns received a 20-year term for charges including attempted robbery, kidnapping, and firearms possession. David Povey was similarly sentenced to 20 years for comparable offenses.
In a statement, the victim revealed his confusion about the identity of his tormentors but confirmed that similar incidents had occurred months earlier, resulting in a cumulative payment exceeding £100,000. The remaining sentences varied, with Luke Johnson receiving 13 years and six months, while Scott Armstrong, who facilitated the cryptocurrency transfers, received two years and four months. The ordeal concluded with all seven individuals facing substantial sentences for their involvement in the violent extortion activities.
The resolution of this case not only underscores the severity of the crimes but also highlights the resilient efforts of law enforcement in dismantling criminal networks and restoring justice.
